A slightly unexpected but very welcome twist on traditional conservas, these mackerel fillets from José Gourmet are bathed in a gently spiced curry sauce that leans aromatic rather than fiery. The fish itself is typically plump and silky, with that rich, clean flavour mackerel does so well, while the sauce brings layers of warmth—think turmeric, soft spice, and a subtle savoury sweetness that complements rather than overwhelms. It’s a tin that feels a little more playful, but still grounded in quality ingredients and careful preparation.

 

Serving suggestions
Best enjoyed slightly warmed to let the curry notes open up. Spoon over steamed rice for an easy, comforting dish, or serve alongside roasted potatoes or a simple flatbread to soak up the sauce. It also works nicely as part of a tapas-style spread—paired with boiled eggs, olives, and a crisp salad to balance the richness.

 

Wine pairing
A dry Riesling is a natural fit here—the acidity and touch of fruit handle the spice beautifully. Alternatively, a lightly chilled Grenache or young Tempranillo works well if you prefer red, offering enough softness not to clash with the curry while still complementing the depth of the mackerel.
