Classic Spanish sardines done in an easy-going, everyday style. These Pepus sardines are carefully packed by hand and preserved in vegetable oil, allowing the natural richness of the fish to remain front and centre without overpowering it. The texture is tender and flaky, with a clean savoury flavour that makes them incredibly versatile; equally comfortable on warm toast, folded through a salad or eaten straight from the tin with a squeeze of lemon.

Pepus has long been known throughout Spain for dependable, approachable conservas that deliver excellent quality for the price. Their range leans toward traditional seafood favourites prepared in a straightforward style that lets the quality of the catch speak for itself.

Serve alongside crusty bread, tomato and olives for a simple tapas spread, or layer onto toasted sourdough with roasted capsicum and parsley. A crisp lager works beautifully here; alternatively try a young Spanish Albariño or an Australian Sauvignon Blanc.

The story of Pepus dates back to 2003, which is when Miquel Tapias, the present owner of Espinaler and the fourth generation of the Tapias family at the head of the business, decided to create a second brand of fish and shellfish preserves. Pepus was a personal friend of the Tapias family and Miquel named his second business "Pepus" in his honour when he passed away. The sardines are fished in the North-East Atlantic and Mediterranean. Steamed lightly and hand packed into tins with sunflower oil. Pepus is the fun, bright brand of Espinaler. They offer some great conservas for a more modest price point. Conservas for the people!
