Yurrita

One of Spain's Oldest Conservas Families

With roots dating back to 1867, Yurrita is one of Spain's oldest continuously operating seafood canning businesses and the oldest canning company in the Basque Country. The family business began in Mutriku, Gipuzkoa, where its original factory operated from the basement of the family home. That historic building, known as Casa Mauleón, is believed to be one of the oldest surviving buildings associated with the Spanish fish-canning industry.

Yurrita's early production focused on salted and pickled fish, distributed throughout Spain from the coastal town of Mutriku. Over five generations, the business evolved into a modern seafood company while retaining its connection to traditional Basque conservas. Today, Yurrita is particularly associated with Bonito del Norte, Cantabrian anchovies and boquerones, alongside a wider range of gourmet seafood products. The company continues to operate from Mutriku, a town with a long-established fishing and canning tradition. That combination of heritage and modern quality control is central to the Yurrita story.

The company maintains certifications relating to sustainable fishing and organic agriculture, reflecting an effort to combine traditional food production with contemporary environmental and quality standards. Yurrita is therefore an excellent example of the evolution of Basque conservas: from small family workshops producing salted fish to a modern Spanish seafood company whose products are enjoyed internationally.

For lovers of premium tinned fish, Yurrita offers a direct connection to more than 150 years of Spanish seafood preservation and Basque culinary tradition.
